Ingredient formulas: grams to cups

Cups and grams are only interchangeable once you know the ingredient's density, expressed as grams per cup. Below is the complete reference for every ingredient in our database — each row shows the exact formula and what 100 grams converts to. Click an ingredient for its full conversion table, calculator, and FAQs.

How to use these formulas

Start by identifying the grams-per-cup value for your ingredient — the middle column of the table above, or the label on many packaged products. Then apply the core formula: divide grams by that value to get cups, or multiply cups by that value to get grams. Keep in mind that these reference values assume the ingredient is measured the standard way for US recipes: flour is spooned and levelled, brown sugar is packed, and butter is measured solid. Sifting flour or pressing it down can change the actual weight by 10–20%, so when precision matters, a digital scale is always the better tool.

Why can't one formula work for all ingredients? A cup is a unit of volume (how much space something fills), while a gram is a unit of mass (how much it weighs). Fluffy powdered cocoa and dense honey can fill the same cup while weighing completely different amounts — that is why honey is about 340 g per cup while cocoa powder is about 125 g per cup. Our per-ingredient pages store the correct density for every ingredient so you never have to guess.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • help_outlineWhat is the formula for converting grams to cups?

Divide the grams by the ingredient's grams-per-cup value: cups = grams ÷ grams-per-cup. For example, 200 grams of all-purpose flour (120 g per cup) equals 200 ÷ 120 = 1.67 cups. The grams-per-cup value is different for every ingredient because each has a different density.

  • help_outlineWhat is the formula for converting cups to grams?

    Multiply the cups by the ingredient's grams-per-cup value: grams = cups × grams-per-cup. For example, 2 cups of granulated sugar (200 g per cup) equals 2 × 200 = 400 grams.

  • help_outlineHow many grams are in one cup?

It depends entirely on the ingredient. One US customary cup holds about 120 g of all-purpose flour, 200 g of granulated sugar, 227 g of butter, and 340 g of honey. There is no single answer because a cup is a unit of volume while grams measure weight.

  • help_outlineHow do I convert grams to ounces?

Divide the grams by 28.3495: ounces = grams ÷ 28.3495. For example, 100 grams equals about 3.53 ounces. To go the other way, multiply ounces by 28.3495.

  • help_outlineHow do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit for baking?

    Use the formula °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. For example, a 180 °C oven equals (180 × 9/5) + 32 = 356 °F, which is usually rounded to 350 °F in American recipes.
